![]() On Tuesday night, August 4th 2009, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office joined nearly 1,000 people in the Dayton City Park to particpate in National Night out.
National Night Out is designed to:
1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
2. Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts;
3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
4. Send a message to criminals, letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
There were 30 exhibits and displays that were on hand this year. The Sheriff's Department dunk tank was a big hit again this year, with Sheriff Walt Hessler, uniformed officers and Prosecuting Attorney Rea Culwell all doing time in the hot seat.
Many special activities took place that night, including a community cookout with free hamburgers, hotdogs and chips provided by Blue Mountain Counseling and the Dayton Chamber of Commerce served up by members of the Dayton Lion's Club, along with free soft drinks provided by Pepsi-Cola Bottling. Youth activities were provided by Columbia County Public Health and the YWCA Fun Factory, along with contests and prize drawings all evening long by various exhibitors. Columbia County Fire District #3 conducted high angle rescue demonstrations from the roof of Dayton High School along with the Washingotn State Patrol providing demonstrations of the capabilities of their $170,000.00 bomb robot. The City of Dayton provided free swimming at the Dayton City Pool.
It was great fun, and the Columbia County Sheriff's Office was honored to be a part of it. We are looking forward to particpating in this event again in 2010!
